KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Chiefs welcomed back wide receiver Jason Avant to the practice field Wednesday.
Avant, who missed the past two days with a hip strain, appeared to run with no limitations.
The Chiefs continue to ease in linebacker Josh Mauga, who missed time with a heel injury suffered in training camp. Mauga has yet to play in a preseason game.
“He’s making progress,” coach Andy Reid said. “We gradually brought him back here at the beginning of practices the last couple of days with that Achilles inflammation.”
Reid said outside linebacker Dee Ford, who suffered a bruised rib in the second preseason game, will play Friday night against the Tennessee Titans.
“He didn’t have a broken rib, which is a good thing,” Reid said. “He’s back. He’ll work in that mix there. (Defensive coordinator) Bob’s (Sutton) got a plan for him there, he and (linebackers coach) Gary (Gibbs).
The players not practicing Wednesday are offensive linemen Jeff Allen (knee), Eric Fisher (ankle) and Tavon Rooks (shortness of breath); quarterback Tyler Bray (knee); tight end Demetrius Harris (foot); wide receivers De’Anthony Thomas (calf) and Junior Hemingway (hip); rookie linebacker Justin March (knee); and defensive tackle Dontari Poe (back).
Poe and Hemingway were on the practice field without their helmets for a second straight day and observed the workout.
