Chiefs WR Hollywood Brown at Jacksonville Hospital with Sternoclavicular Injury

Chiefs WR Hollywood Brown at Jacksonville Hospital with Sternoclavicular Injury

Matt Derrick August 10, 2024

Chiefs wide receiver Hollywood Brown sustained a posterior sternoclavicular joint injury in his shoulder during the team’s preseason opener at Jacksonville, a development that puts the beginning of his 2024 season in doubt.

“They’ve taken him to the hospital,” head coach Andy Reid said after the game. “They’ll check him out, and they’re working on that as we speak.”

Brown sustained the injury on the first offensive play of the game. Brown caught a pass from Patrick Mahomes for 11 yards before Jaguars cornerback Montaric Brown took him to the ground. Brown appeared to grab at his left shoulder after the play.

If the injury sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the same injury Tyreek Hill suffered in Jacksonville in 2019, head coach Andy Reid said. Hill was transported to Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville after his injury and treated by an ortho-trauma physician. The team treating Hill was able to reduce the dislocation under anesthesia but without surgery.

It was not immediately clear if Brown was taken to the same hospital or treated by the same physician. Hill’s prognosis at the time was an absence of four to six weeks, which is typically for a similar injuries that do not require surgery, and he returned after a four-game absence. It’s unclear how severe Brown’s injury is or if surgery will be necessary.

“I think he’ll miss some time,” Reid said. “We’ll just see where it’s at. They’re kind of going through it right now and we’ll know more later on here.”

A similar timeline to Hill would put the season opener in doubt for Brown. The Chiefs face the Baltimore Ravens in 26 days from Saturday night. Hill went 35 days between his injury and his return to the lineup after missing four games.

Offensive lineman McCade Mettauer left the game with a left knee injury. He will undergo further examination when the team returns to Kansas City. Offensive tackle Wanya Morris was held out of the game for precautionary reasons after injuring his knee during practice this week.

Morris was one of 14 Chiefs players who did not participate in Saturday’s preseason opener. The complete list of players sitting out:
