ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Chiefs rounded out their roster before the first practice of training camp with the addition of wide receiver Kyle Sheets while also officially placing five players on the physically unable to perform and non-football injury lists.
Sheets, a 6-foot-3, 217-pound consensus Division II All-American last season at Slippery Rock, initially signed as an undrafted free agent with New Orleans. The Saints waived Sheets last month after the team’s mandatory minicamp.
The Chiefs also officially placed five players on reserve lists opening camp. Left guard Joe Thuney (pectoral), defensive end Charles Omenihu (knee), defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (triceps) and cornerback Jaylen Watson (unspecified muscle injury) were placed on the physically unable to perform list. Defensive end B.J. Thompson, who suffered a cardiac arrest at the team facility last month, was placed on the non-football injury list. All five players continue counting toward the 90-player roster limit.
Omenihu, Nnadi and Watson worked out on the sideline Wednesday and in the training tent but did not practice.
The addition of Sheets leaves the Chiefs with 90 players on the active roster plus offensive tackle Chukwuebuka Godrick, who has an International roster exemption.
Sheets caught 76 passes for 1,186 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. The team captain ranked third in the nation in Division II for touchdown receptions and sixth in receiving yards. He finished his career with the third-most touchdown catches in school history with 29 while also ranking fourth in receiving yards (2,440) and seventh in receptions (154).
Sheet got involved early in Wednesday’s practice, getting a target from Carson Wentz on the fourth play of the 7-on-7 period. He nearly made a great catch down the right sideline but could not hold on to the ball while going to the ground.
