ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Chiefs on Monday signed cornerback Damond Smith to a free-agent contract.
The 23-year-old Smith played collegiately at South Alabama and spent part of the 2013 season with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League.
He measures 5-11, 185 pounds and possesses 4.52 speed, which he clocked at his Pro Day workout on July 9, 2013.
The signing addresses depth as the Chiefs are dealing with injuries in the defensive secondary.
Rookie cornerback Phillip Gaines banged his head during Monday morning’s practice and did not finish the workout. Cornerbacks and first cousins David Van Dyke and DeMarcus Van Dyke are dealing with hamstring injuries.
Defensive back Sanders Commings is currently on the non-football injury list with a foot strain.
The Chiefs are back to the maximum allowed of 90 players on the offseason roster with the Smith signing.
