KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs added 17 undrafted free agents to their roster for this weekend’s rookie minicamp while also parting ways, however briefly, with seven players to make space on the active roster.
Kansas City began Saturday with 81 players on the 90-player roster. That includes offensive tackle Chukwuebuka Godrick, an NFL International Pathway Player with a roster exception. By the end of the day the club had a full complement of 91 players under contract.
The undrafted free agents are listed below with their current uniform number:
- RB Emani Bailey, Texas Christian, No. 39
- CB Miles Battle, Utah, No. 45
- LB Swayze Bozeman, Southern Mississippi, No. 55
- WR Phillip Brooks, Kansas State, No. 88
- WR Reggie Brown, James Madison, No. 89
- TE Baylor Cupp, Texas Tech, No. 47
- OT Ethan Driskell, Marshall, No. 75
- LB Curtis Jacobs, Penn State, No. 29
- DT Fabien Lovett, Florida State, No. 99
- OT Griffin McDowell, Tennessee Chattanooga, No. 68
- OG McKade Mettauer, Oklahoma, No. 70
- CB Derrick (D.J.) Miller, Kent State, No. 38
- P Ryan Rehkow, Brigham Young, No. 46
- CB Christian Roland-Wallace, Southern California, No. 30
- RB Carson Steele, UCLA, No. 42
- OG Nick Torres, Villanova, No. 79
- LB Luquay Washington, Central Connecticut State, No. 50
The Chiefs made room for the 17 additions by waiving five players, releasing wide receiver Anthony Miller and withdrawing the exclusive rights tender for linebacker Cole Christiansen.
There is still a chance Christiansen and others released this weekend could return to the club after the minicamp if the Chiefs do not choose to keep all 17 college free agents signed Saturday.
The five players waived were wide receiver Jacob Copeland, tight end Izaiah Gathings, safety Tyree Gillespie, defensive end Jordan Smith and wide receiver Shi Smith.
Miller was a 2018 second-round pick for Chicago. Under then-head coach Matt Nagy, Miller was a three-year starter with 134 catches for 1,564 yards and 11 touchdowns, including seven scores as a rookie. But after a trade to Houston in July 2021, Miller has played in just three games with six catches for 25 yards and two scores. He was released by Texans in October 2021 and signed by Pittsburgh. During training camp in 2022, Miller suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. He spent time last season with San Francisco and Indianapolis.
Gathings spent training camp with the Chiefs last summer and played in all three preseason games with 32 snaps on offense and nine special teams snaps, catching one pass for 5 yards. He joined the club following Jody Forton’s shoulder injury and impressed as a pass catcher during his time in St. Joseph.
Gillespie, a former Missouri Tigers star defender, signed with the Chiefs practice squad in December but was released on Jan. 5. A 2021 fourth-round draft pick for Las Vegas, Gillespie has also spent time with Tennessee, Jacksonville and Houston. He has eight tackles in 14 NFL games.
Copeland, Jordan Smith and Shi Smith all signed reserve future contracts with the Chiefs in January and have yet to play for the club.
