LAS VEGAS — The Kansas City Chiefs won’t have All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney available for Sunday’s Super Bowl showdown with the San Francisco 49ers but the club delivered good news for receiver Rashee Rice one day after a scare in Thursday’s practice.
Thuney was ruled out by the club on Friday due to a pectoral injury. Head coach Andy Reid said earlier during the week that Thuney’s availability would depend on his ability to restore strength in his injured pectoral but that it would be a “long shot” for him to play Sunday.
Nick Allegretti, who started at left guard in the team’s AFC Championship win over Baltimore, will play in Thuney’s place. This will be Allegretti’s second Super Bowl start after he lined up there for the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV against Tampa Bay.
Rice gave the Chiefs a scare on Thursday when he got stepped on during the end of practice. But Rice was a full participant on Friday and should be ready to go for Sunday’s game.
Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who was limited Thursday due to an illness, was a full participant Friday and is clear to play on Sunday.
The only Chiefs player limited Thursday was running back Jerick McKinnon, who remains on injured reserve. He underwent surgery for a core muscle injury Jan. 2. The team has until 3 p.m. central time Saturday to activate McKinnon to the active roster if they choose to do so. The team lists McKinnon as questionable, however, and Reid described his chances of playing as “slim” earlier this week.
