Chiefs Rule Out Kadarius Toney vs. Raiders, Mecole Hardman Lands on Injured Reserve

Chiefs Rule Out Kadarius Toney vs. Raiders, Mecole Hardman Lands on Injured Reserve

Matt Derrick November 25, 2023

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs will be out two of their receivers Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders after the club ruled out Kadarius Toney, adding a hip injury to his status on the injury report.

Toney developed some discomfort in his hip during practice Friday, a source told Chiefs Digest. With the hip still bothering him Saturday morning, he was ruled out for the game and will undergo further testing. He was a full participant Friday despite the hip discomfort but was already on the injury report with an ankle injury.

The club had previously ruled out Mecole Hardman due to a sprained thumb he suffered in Monday night’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Saturday the team placed Hardman on injured reserve, which means he will miss at least the next four games before he can return.

Kansas City elevated two players from the practice squad Saturday for the game against the Raiders, running back La’Mical Perine and WR Montrell Washington. Perine will take the place of Jerick McKinnon, who was ruled out Friday with a groin strain.

Washington’s addition gives the Chiefs six receivers available for Sunday’s game along with Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Justin Watson, Skyy Moore, Rashee Rice and Richie James. James is expected to make his return to action after missing eight games with an MCL injury in his knee.

Perine saw his only action of the season in Week 9 against Miami filling in for Clyde Edwards-Helaire who was out with an illness. He played four snaps each on special teams and offense, gaining 1 yard on a single carry. He was also elevated for the team’s Week 2 game at Jacksonville but did not play. After three elevations to the game-day roster, practice squad players must either remain on the active roster or be placed on waivers, which allows another team to claim them.

Washington has played in four games for the Chiefs this season with 34 snaps, all on special teams. He filled in as a return specialist, averaging 7.6 yards on eight punt returns and returning a kickoff for 20 yards. This is his first practice squad elevation since he was waived from the 53-player roster on Oct. 19.

Hardman has played in four games since his return to the Chiefs via trade with the New York Jets on Oct. 18. He has eight catches on 10 targets with the Chiefs for 41 yards and was also credited with a run for 3 yards. He also averaged 8.7 yards on seven punt returns and returned a kickoff for 14 yards.
