KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney was limited in practice again on Thursday, casting further doubt on whether he will return this weekend against the Houston Texans after missing the last three games with a hamstring injury.
Head coach Andy Reid on Wednesday described Toney as “day by day,” and said he planned to evaluate the receiver at the end of the week before making a determination on his status.
Similar deliberations surround fellow receiver Mecole Hardman, who returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since an abdominal illness forced him to injured reserve and kept him out of the team’s last five ball games. Hardman notably lost weight during his illness. He was designated to return from injured reserve on Wednesday, which started a 21-day clock during which he can practice with the team but doesn’t count toward the 53-player active roster. Since he’s not on the active roster, the Chiefs are not required to list him on their injury report.
Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy didn’t shed much additional light on their potential returns on Thursday, however.
“Our training room has done a great job of getting those guys ready to participate with practice, but we’ll just see how it goes,” Bieniemy said. “The thing that our training room does, they do a great job, so we’re just going to go from there, see exactly what takes place.”
While the Chiefs’ injury report remained lengthy on Thursday with 13 names, Toney was the only player who was limited. Cornerback Nazeeh Johnson, who was limited with a hamstring issue Wednesday, was upgraded to full in Thursday’s indoor practice. Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi was added to the list Thursday with an Achilles issue but was listed as s full participant.
Patrick Mahomes, who appears on the report with a right-hand injury, was also a full participant again Thursday. It was unclear whether Mahomes was wearing any protective equipment on his right hand from photos taken during practice. There are no concerns about the injury impacting the quarterback’s availability this weekend against the Texans.
Houston’s injury report carried 12 names on Thursday with six players out, including starting running back Dameon Pierce, who appears likely to miss this Sunday’s contest with an ankle injury. Wide receiver Brandin Cooks, who missed the last two games with a calf injury, returned to practice on a limited basis Thursday.
