KANSAS CITY, Mo. — LeSean McCoy shares a rich history with Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach, so it's only to ask if the club might be interested in reuniting the trip in Kansas City following his release by Buffalo on Saturday.
Veach didn't say anything to dissuade the speculation Saturday during his post-waiver wire conference call with reporters.
“He's still a talented player and does a lot great things in the pass game,” Veach said. “If it is official like it's been reported, I'm sure he's a guy that we'll take a peek at, and we kind of have a rapport with.”
It was Veach, then a coaches' assistant with Philadelphia when McCoy entered the league from Pittsburgh in 2009, who pushed his boss Reid to give the 5-11, 210-pound back a look. Veach hounded Reid with tape of McCoy, prodding him to grab McCoy in that year's draft. The Eagles selected McCoy in the second round with the No. 53 overall pick.
McCoy became an immediate impact player for the Eagles in both the running and passing games. He led the league with 2,146 yards from scrimmage in 2013, and piled up 14,222 yards from scrimmage in his 10-year NFL career.
He spent the past four seasons with Buffalo, rushing for 514 yards last season with a career-worst 3.2 yards per carry. He totaled 752 yards from scrimmage with three touchdowns.
The Bills acquired Frank Gore via free agency this offseason, then selected Florida Atlantic running back Devin Singletary in the third round of this year's draft. That made McCoy expendable, and the Bills reportedly couldn't find a buyer for his $6.175 million base salary in 2019. He's now a free agent able to sign with any team for a new deal.
In 2017, McCoy actively campaigned for Veach to earn promotion to general manager after the club parted ways with John Dorsey. McCoy tweeted, "Brett Veach is our man Brett Veach is our guy …!!!!!!!"
Veach stressed the need to keep his distance from McCoy for now since the NFL transaction report listing his release hadn't officially been distributed to teams yet.
“But I think the official list will get out, once he's officially on the list, we'll be able to talk about him,” Veach said.
