KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs will open their 2025 training camp July 22 in St. Joseph on the campus of Missouri Western State University in a departure from their usual schedule.
All players are planned to report July 20- 21. Physical examinations, the run test, team meetings, and classroom instruction will take place on July 21 before the team hits the field for the first time the next day. The club will host its first practice open to the public on July 22. The team is expected to release its full training camp schedule on Monday, June 23.
“I know the guys are looking to take a break here,” coach Andy Reid said, “but they’re also looking forward to ramping up for for the season and training camp and that’s how they’ll approach that.”
There will not be a traditional three-day minicamp for rookies, quarterbacks and returning injured players ahead of camp. The cancelling of the rookie minicamp means young players will be on their own in ensuring that they stay in their playbook to be prepared and also maintain their physical condition. Reid said he didn’t see the need to host the camp this season.
“We don’t have a ton of guys that we could bring there, so I didn’t feel like that was a valuable time,” Reid said. “We got the rookies here with extra time, so we took advantage of that and done that throughout the whole offseason program. So I thought we got to accomplish what we needed to.”
While the later start to camp offers a bit of a reprise to rookies and quarterbacks, it also means their Week 1 opponent will have a head start on preparations. The Los Angeles Chargers have their rookies reporting July 12 and open their full minicamp July 17. The Chargers face the Detroit Lions in the Hall of Fame Game on July 31 prompting their early camp arrival.
The Chiefs wrapped up their offseason program Thursday with the dreaded conditioning test — 10 “gassers,” which consist of running the width of the football field and back. It’s a preview for training camp when players must repeat the test on day one before getting clearance to practice.
“There’s a lot of bodies right shoulder to shoulder,” said linebacker Nick Bolton. “I was running around across the field and back. I got a little bit of rest in between. Knock about 10 of those things out.”
Bolton said he plans to take a few days off before getting back into conditioning to prepare for the season.
“I did a great job, OTAs, and before, I’m just kind of getting in shape,” Bolton said. “I get my body fat down. I’m trying to stay in condition, and I’m just going to try to keep that as we keep going. Kind of lose about maybe two pounds. Other than that though, have fun, spend some time with family, get away from the game a little bit because we plan on doing this thing for eight months.”
