LAS VEGAS – The Chiefs franchise claimed its fourth Super Bowl championship, but two members of their coaching staff now have more rings than that.
Linebackers coach Brendan Daly joins an exclusive group of 15 people with six Super Bowl rings. Daly won three rings as an assistant and defensive line coach with New England, and he now owns three rings as a defensive line and linebackers coach with Kansas City.
Only three individuals have more Super Bowl rings than Daly. Former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has eight, six with New England and two as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. Quarterback Tom Brady has seven (six with the Patriots, one with Tampa Bay) as does Neal Dahlen, who won five in the front office for the San Francisco 49ers and later two with the Denver Broncos.
Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt also added to his collection with his fifth ring. In addition to three now with the Chiefs, Merritt won two with the New York Giants as their secondary/safeties coach. Merritt joins a group of 18 people with five rings, and Daly is one of only 18 people who have earned more Super Bowl rings.
The first of Merritt’s rings with New York came in the 2007 season when the Giants upset the previously undefeated Patriots 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Spagnuolo himself now has four rings along with his three from Kansas City. He joins a growing group of more than 40 players, coaches and executives with four rings.
And now several Chiefs players and coaches, including Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, chairman/CEO Clark Hunt and others with three rings.
And they may not be done yet.
