KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The roster moves have begun ahead of Tuesday’s league-wide deadline for teams to cut personnel from 90 to 75 players.
The Chiefs on Saturday waived tight end Adam Schiltz and rookie cornerback Kenneth Penny, sources familiar with the transactions informed ChiefsDigest.com. The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Chiefs have not announced the transactions.
Schiltz, a native of Ponca City, Okla., originally entered the league in 2013 as an undrafted free agent out of Emporia State with the Houston Texans. He spent the 2014 season on the Chiefs practice squad.
The Chiefs had tight ends Travis Kelce, rookie James O’Shaughnessy, Richard Gordon, Ryan Taylor, Demetrius Harris and Schiltz on the roster prior to Saturday’s move. Harris hasn’t practiced or participated in preseason action since undergoing foot surgery in early May.
Penny, who played collegiately at UNLV, originally signed with the Chiefs on June 18 after a successful tryout at mandatory minicamp. The Chiefs waived him on July 10 before bringing him back on July 28 for training camp.
The Chiefs now have nine cornerbacks on the roster following the waiving of Penny: Sean Smith, Phillip Gaines, Marcus Peters, Jamell Fleming, Marcus Cooper, Steven Nelson, Aaron Hester, Deji Olatoye and Kevin Short.
