KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs Coach Andy Reid delivered a small update on the status of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and as the club’s offseason workouts begin this week, fans will take any update they can get.
“He’s doing great, but we just got to — you got to be smart with this thing,” Reid said Monday via a Zoom press conference kickstarting the offseason program.
Mahomes is returning from a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee, and just cleared the four-month mark since his surgery on Dec. 15. His anticipated return to the football field was estimated at six to nine months. Every bit of forward progress puts the quarterback closer to being ready by training camp and meeting his goal of starting the season in Week 1.
The first phase of organized team practice activities (OTA) is limited to meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation. Phase two, which starts May 4, introduces on-field workouts along with individual and group drills and “perfect play drills” or installation periods with no opposing offense or defense on the field.
It’s anticipated that Mahomes will take part in some portions of Phase Two, sources tell Chiefs Digest. It’s unlikely Mahomes will see any action during 7-on-7, 9-on-7 or 11-on-11 periods during Phase III, which begins May 26.
“He goes to the meetings, he can lift, do all of that rehab,” Reid said. “That’s the phase he’s in right now. So we’ll just see, kind of play it by ear, see where he’s at.”
