Chiefs Promote DT Taylor Stallworth, Sign RB Wayne Gallman to Practice Squad

Chiefs Promote DT Taylor Stallworth, Sign RB Wayne Gallman to Practice Squad

Matt Derrick October 12, 2022

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs made a series of roster moves on Wednesday morning, with the likelihood of a couple more to come before Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

The Chiefs promoted defensive tackle Taylor from the practice squad to the active roster, where he takes the place of defensive end Benton Whitley, whom the club placed on waivers. The team also signed running back Wayne Gallman to the practice squad.

Cornerback Trent McDuffie was also designated to return after spending the past four weeks on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. That starts the 21-day clock for him to practice with the team before returning to the active roster, although it’s unlikely he’ll remain on injured reserve for the entire window.

Stallworth initially signed with the Chiefs as a free agent in April after spending two seasons in New Orleans and the past two seasons with Indianapolis. The Chiefs released Stallworth during the cutdown to the initial 53-player roster but signed him to the practice squad the next day. He played in 32 games with the Colts over the past two seasons, starting two games as a key rotational defender. In 585 defensive snaps, he totaled 28 combined tackles, 3.5 sacks and 15 quarterback pressures.

Gallman, a sixth-year veteran, was a fourth-round pick for the New York Giants in 2017 and started 14 games for them in four seasons. He split the 2021 campaign with Atlanta and Minnesota, playing in eight games with 28 carries for 104 yards. He’s played in 61 games in his NFL career with 1,548 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground, averaging 4.2 yards per carry. He also has 81 catches for 519 yards and two scores. He’s also been a frequent social teams contributor throughout his career.

The Chiefs signed Whitley off the practice squad of the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 21 with Mike Danna dealing with a calf injury. The undrafted rookie from Holy Cross was inactive for each of the last three games.

Stallworth’s promotion and the addition of Gallman leave the Chiefs with one open spot on the practice squad. The team has also yet to make a move regarding defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton, who will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee Monday night against the Las Vegas Raiders. He expects to be placed on injured reserve soon.

If the Chiefs choose to active McDuffie before Sunday’s game against the Bill, he could replace Wharton on the 53-place on the active roster.
