ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Chiefs linebacker Anthony Hitchens continued building his training camp workload as he returns from a recent hamstring injury, putting head coach Andy Reid closer to getting his prized defensive free agent back on the field full time.

"Hitchens did partial today, it was good to get him back out there," head coach Andy Reid said following practice.

Running back Charcandrick West returned to practice Saturday for the first time since suffering a concussion earlier during training camp.

Two Chiefs did not finish practice. Linebacker Dee Ford left the field early with an illness. Reid said cornerback Makinton Dorleant tweaked his hamstring during special teams work at the end of practice.

Hitchens joined Reggie Ragland at inside linebacker with the first-team defense at the start of Saturday's workout. Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (elbow) also practiced on a partial basis.

Four Chiefs did not practice. That list includes safety Daniel Sorensen, who underwent surgery this week for a tibial plateau fracture that included damaged to the MCL and a torn meniscus. Safety Leon McQuay (hamstring), cornerback Keith Reaser (quad) and offensive lineman Jimmy Murray (knee) also did not practice.

The team also signed undrafted free agent offensive lineman Alex Officer. He fills the roster spot vacated by Dillon Gordon, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Thursday's preseason game against the Houston Texans.
