KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs activated tight Demetrius Harris on Tuesday, clearing space by waiving offensive lineman Ike Boettger.
Harris missed the team's Week 1 38-28 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers while serving a one-game suspension for violation of the league's substance-abuse policy. The suspension stemmed from Harris' guilty plea following his March 2017 arrest for marijuana possession.
The Chiefs played Week 1 with just two tight ends, starter Travis Kelce and backup Alex Ellis. The club also utilized fullback Anthony Sherman in a tight end role. Sherman contributed with a 36-yard touchdown reception in the game.
The team's tight ends appeared together Tuesday during a visit to the North Kansas City Fire Department. Kelce said he's happy to have Harris back on the field.
"I consider him family, that's my guy," Kelce said. "To have him back in the office and back out there at practice, and especially out on Sundays, is just going to be that much more fluent and that much better for us as a team."
Boettger, a 6-foot-6, 313-pound rookie offensive lineman from Iowa, joined the Chiefs on Sept. 2. The club claimed him off waivers from the Buffalo Bills. Boettger was inactive during Sunday's game against the Chargers.
The roster move restores the Chiefs to a full complement for three tight ends while reducing the offensive line head count to nine players.
Harris appeared with Kelce during the event with the NKCFD but the club did not make him available for interviews.
