KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The status of Tyreek Hill's future with the Chiefs remains up in the air, with club chairman and CEO Clark Hunt saying the star wide receiver remains away from the franchise for “the foreseeable future” as investigations continue into a broken arm suffered by Hill's 3-year-old son.
“There are a couple of ongoing investigations related to Tyreek,” Hunt said. “We're going to have let that process play out.”
KCTV-5 on Thursday and Friday aired portions of an audio recording between Hill and his fiancee Crystal Espinal discussing the injury to their son. Hunt said that was among the first pieces of information the club had obtained in the investigated into the incident.
“That's why he's not with the organization at this point and we would expect that to be the case until we have a chance to work our way through other information we're able to get,” Hunt said.
The club suspended Hill from all team activities Thursday night following the initial release of the audio recording. Hunt placed no timetable on when the team may make a decision regarding the player's future with the team.
“I would just point out that Tyreek's not with the franchise right now,” Hunt said. “We're going to go through the process, and as Brett said Thursday night we will make the right decision on Tyreek at the right time.”
When asked if the incident with Hill had shaken his confidence in the team's ability to do their due diligence on acquiring and developing players, Hunt said every player brings risk to an organization.
“Could be his playing ability, could be things that distract him off the field as well as trouble that they get into,” Hunt explained. “That's a risk that you take. It's something that as a franchise we have to be willing to own when it doesn't go the right way. That's something that I believe in, and it's something that I know Brett believes as well.”
Hunt said the audio recording of Hill “deeply disturbed” him.
“It obviously is a tough situation for the organization and we wish the best for his family,” Hunt said.
