Chiefs Return for Offseason Workouts Starting April 15

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The most significant offseason for the Chiefs since head coach Andy Reid's arrival in 2013 shifts into full gear April 15 with the official launch of the team's offseason program.

It's the first opportunity for Reid and his staff to see their latest additions on the field, including free agents Tyrann Mathieu, Alex Okafor and Bashaud Breeland. It also marks the first gathering of the club's defensive squad under the watch of new coordinator Steve Spaguolo.

The offseason program consists of three stages. Phase One starting on April 15 consists of two weeks of activities limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation only.

Phase Two comprises the next three weeks of the offseason program, which includes individual player instruction and team practices on “separates” basis only against air. No live contract or offense vs. defense drills are allowed.

The third and final phase over the final four weeks of offseason program includes 10 days of organized team activity practices. No live contact can take place, but teams drills including seven-on-seven, nine-on-seven and full team drills with helmets are permitted.

The OTA workouts take place at the team's training complex near Arrowhead Stadium on May 21-23, May 28-30 and June 4-7. These practices are optional for players.

Phase Three concludes with a three-day mandatory minicamp June 11-13. This will serve as the final offseason workouts before players enjoy a respite prior to reporting to training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri in late July.

None of the offseason practices are open to the public, although the Chiefs in the past held a practice season open to certain season ticket members.

The club will also host a three-day rookie minicamp following the 2019 NFL draft. Players on the roster who have not yet earned a full accredited season can participate in the minicamp along with the new draft selections, rookie free agents and tryout players.

Clubs with new head coaches are permitted a two-week headstart on offseason workouts and can host a voluntary three-day minicamp during the first two weeks of workouts. Eight clubs are starting early and hosting a voluntary minicamp.
