KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs will carryover just more than $5 million in salary cap space int0 the 2017 season thanks to coming in below the salary cap during the 2016. That cap relief promises to to be valuable with several veterans’ salary cap hits on the rise and free agency looming for safety Eric Berry and defensive tackle Dontari Poe, among others.

The Chiefs will carryover $5,002,168 from 2016 into next season’s salary cap figure, according to the numbers released by the NFL Players Association. That’s nearly double the $2,622,838 the team carried over from 2015 into the 2016 season. The Chiefs rank 18th in the NFL in carryover for the 2016 season.
The 2017 salary cap figure has yet to be released, the final number is projected to range between $163-$165 million. The 2016 salary cap came in at $155.27 million. That would put the Chiefs’ salary cap total between $168-170 million using the carryover from 2016.
The league usually announces the salary cap number well before the beginning of free agency and the league’s calendar year. This season, the league year starts March 9. The league announced the salary cap number on Feb. 26 last year, although the NFLPA did not announced the carryover totals until Feb. 25.
