KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs finalized their 10-player practice squad Sunday, but not without some surprises and departures.
Running back Darrin Reaves and wide receiver Frankie Hammond Jr. highlight the players signed to the squad. All 10 players signed by the Chiefs participated in the team’s training camp.
Reaves led the Chiefs in rushing during the preseason with 144 yards and two touchdowns. Reaves originally signed with the Carolina Panthers after going undrafted during the 2014 draft and played six games as a rookie.
The Panthers cut Reaves in July 2015, and he signed with the Chiefs in August. The team waived Reaves at the end of training camp, but he joined the team’s practice squad following the injury to Jamaal Charles.
The 6-1, 184-pound Hammond joined the Chiefs in 2013 as an undrafted free agent and spent the season on the team’s practice squad. The receiver played 25 games the last two years for Kansas City, mostly on special teams and as a kick returner.
Quarterbacks Aaron Murray and Kevin Hogan head the list of former Chiefs joining the practice squads for new teams. Arizona picked up Murray and Cleveland added Hogan for their practice squads.
Other players signing with the Chiefs’ practice squad:
- OLB Tyrell Adams: The 6-2, 228-pound speed linebacker adds depth for the Chiefs, who have a banged up lineup at outside linebacker. Adams spent time with the Seahawks in training camp a year ago as an undrafted free agent from West Georgia.
- WR Seantavius Jones: The 24-year-old possession receiver from Valdosta State was among the team’s early cuts last week. Jones spent most of the 2014-15 seasons on the practice squad of the New Orleans Saints. The receiver has size at 6-3, 200 pounds and experience in the West Coast offense.
- DL David King: The 26-year-old King made a strong push for the 53-man roster, but lost out in a numbers game. Showed good good instincts in his opportunities, picking up four tackles and a sack during the preseason.
- C Daniel Munyer: Munyer provides insurance along the interior offensive line with the ability to play guard as well. The 6-1, 305-pound lineman from Colorado joined the Chiefs last year as an undrafted free agent.
- OL Jarrod Pughsley: Pughsley appeared to be in a dead-heat with Jordan Devey for the final offensive line spot. The 6-4, 310 Pughsley showed versatility by playing multiple positions, mostly guard and and center. Also saw action with the first team as as sixth lineman in short-yardage situations.
- S Shak Randolph: The undrafted rookie from Southern Methodist impressed in training camp with his size and speed. The 6-3, 213-pound college cornerback is making the transition to safety, and showed strong coverage skills in camp while picking up three tackles in four preseason games.
- ILB Terrance Smith: The 6-2, 235-pound inside linebacker from Florida State had a productive preseason, making 12 tackles and recovering a fumble against Green Bay. The undrafted rookie display athleticism, and as a high school sprinter and jumper also has above average speed.
- S Brock Vereen: The safety has the size the Chiefs covet in the defensive secondary at 5-11 and 200 pounds. Vereen retired from the New England Patriots last month before signing with the Chiefs a few days later. He impressed in the limited opportunities he received as a late arrival, and forced a fumble with a big hit against Green Bay Thursday night.
Former Chiefs tight end Brian Parker was claimed on waivers. The New York Jets claimed Parker and added him to their active roster.
