Week 1: Johnson out, Asamoah questionable on final injury report

Week 1: Johnson out, Asamoah questionable on final injury report

Herbie Teope September 7, 2013

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Chiefs list 11 players on Friday’s official NFL Injury Report for the season opener against the Jaguars and will be without rookie linebacker Nico Johnson (ankle).

Listed as questionable are safety Hussain Abdullah (foot), guard Jon Asamoah (calf), defensive end Allen Bailey, who is home with his family following the death of his father, and rookie tight end Travis Kelce (knee).

“Allen has missed because of personal reasons, and I understand that,” coach Andy Reid said during his Friday media session. It was important that he was with his family right now, but we’ll see him when we get down there and we’ll go from there.”

Meanwhile, Reid sounded cautiously optimistic about Asamoah, who is listed as not practicing the entire week.

“I mean he did some stuff today, and we’ll just see how it goes,” Reid said. He was able to do a little bit today, and we’ll just play it day by day.”

The Chiefs list safety Quintin Demps (hamstring), right tackle Eric Fisher (shoulder), linebacker James-Michael Johnson (groin), linebacker Dezman Moses (toe), cornerback Sean Smith (neck) and offensive lineman Donald Stephenson (shoulder) as probable.

Sunday’s matchup between the Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars features the two teams that entered April’s NFL with the No. 1 and No. 2 picks following disastrous 2012 campaigns.

Still, optimism is high in Kansas City for a turnaround with Reid and general manager John Dorsey. And with the offseason workouts, minicamps, training camp and preseason behind him, Reid is ready for the regular season.

“I feel good,” Reid said when asked his feeling on his team. “We have to keep improving every week, and this is a start for us right here so we look forward to that challenge of playing Jacksonville.”
