Oddsmakers Set Patrick Mahomes as Decisive NFL MVP Favorite

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If you want to make a potential lucrative bet on who might win the 2019 NFL Most Valuable Player Award, then the person you don’t want to place a wager on is Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The betting odds on Mahomes winning this year’s MVP Award dropped to 1/1 this week, according to BetOnline. He was the favorite last week at 2/1. Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson climbed up as the second favorite at 5/1, followed by Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott and New England quarterback Tom Brady at 7/1.

The Chiefs also have one of the leading favorites for offensive rookie of the year with receiver Mecole Hardman at 16/1. New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is the favorite at 2/1. Hardman ranks as the No. 8 overall betting favorite and third-ranked wide receiver. Only Washington’s Terry McLaurin (9/1) and Baltimore’s Marquise Brown (14/1) have better odds than Hardman.

Betting odds for the Chiefs to win the division, the AFC Championship and Super Bowl title improved during the past week. The Chiefs went from a 2/7 favorite in the AFC West to a 1/5 favorite, meaning a bettor would have to bet $5 just to net a $1 win. The Chargers fell from 3/1 to 4/1 while the Oakland Raiders dropped from 20/1 to 25/1 and the Denver Broncos are now 50/1 from 33/1.

For the AFC title, the Chiefs improved from 7/2 to 5/2 odds during the past week. The New England Patriots remain the favorite, although their odds fell from 3/2 to 7/4.

The Chiefs also now own the second-best odds to win the 2020 Super Bowl, going from 7/1 last week to 11/2 this week. The Patriots remain the favorite, but their odds fell from 13/4 to 4/1. The Chiefs were tied last week with the Los Angeles Rams, but the Rams dropped slightly from 7/1 to 15/2.

Despite the oddsmakers falling in love with the Chiefs, bettors seem to think Mahomes may cool off a bit in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions. Mahomes is gunning for an NFL-record fourth-straight game with 300 or more yards passing, three or more touchdowns and zero interceptions. The odds are 2/1 he will do it again. But 1/3 that he will not.

BetOnline also has the the Chiefs as the favorite in another betting proposition: which team will Jacksonville cornerback Jalen Ramey will play for next? The Chiefs are the betting favorite at 5/2, followed by the Patriots (5/1) and Raiders 6/1).
