Chiefs’ Scouting Staff Finds New Fans on College Campuses

Matt Derrick August 29, 2019

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It's not hard to find enthusiasm for the Chiefs in Kansas City, but general manager Brett Veach sees excitement for the 2019 season coming from new avenues.

“It's funny because every year, right around the time that training camp breaks, my staff goes out on the road and they start hitting the colleges,” Veach said, “and every now and then we'll get a request for a t-shirt or a hat. My email box has been flooded with my scouts needing dozens of t-shirts and hats.”

Veach made the comments at the annual Kickoff Luncheon hosted by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. The event drew about 800 fans and business leaders to meet the team's players, coaches and staff before the start of the season.

College scouts getting hit for Chiefs memorabilia on college campuses is just the latest indication that the team has reached a new pinnacle of respect and fandom on the heels of last year's AFC title game appearance and Patrick Mahomes winning MVP honors.

“I think the buzz is nationwide and we're excited to get this thing rolling,” Veach said.
