The Chiefs are back to 89 players on the offseason roster following Wednesday’s release of running back Cyrus Gray.

Gray earlier in the morning took to Twitter offered gratitude to the organization while rookies, quarterbacks and select players were practicing:

Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed Gray’s release during Wednesday morning’s post-practice media session with reporters.

The 5-10, 206-pound Gray originally joined the Chiefs out of Texas A&M as a sixth-round pick (182nd overall) in the 2012 NFL Draft.

He finishes his stint with the Chiefs appearing in 35 games, totaling 99 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries and 64 yards receiving on nine catches.

Gray’s biggest impact came on special teams, where he served as punter Dustin Colquitt’s personal protector and as the lead blocker on kickoff returns.

Gray suffered a torn ACL in Week 10 of the 2014 season, and spent the offseason recovering.

While he was physically present during organized team activities or mandatory minicamp, Gray was limited to the warm-up portion without a helmet and did not participate in individual position drills or team-related drills.

Gray was set to enter the 2015 season in the final year of his contract prior to his release.

The Chiefs now have five running backs on the roster ahead of Saturday’s first full team practice: Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis, De’Anthony Thomas, Charcandrick West and rookie Keshawn Hill.

With Thomas set to transition to wide receiver, the open spot signals second-year pro Charcandrick West will likely get the first shot as the No. 3 running back.
